The hagfish dates back at least 300 million years. The secret of survival for these eel-like sea creatures can be found in the rate and volume of slime it produces to fend off predators. Interestingly, the oldest fossils of these eel-like sea creatures, were found in Illinois, and today researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are beginning to uncover the mystery of how the hagfish uses this substance to choke its predators.

President Obama has named 102 scientists and researchers as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. MechSE assistant professor Randy Ewoldt was among these honorees.

Members of the Ewoldt Research Group, exploring how air bubbles rise within a complex fluid, like those found while processing wet concrete, wondered if they could actually get them to sink instead by shaking the mixture in the right way. During the recent 69th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics, MechSE assistant professor Randy Ewoldt and MechSE doctoral candidate Jeremy Koch presented their work studying bubbles within complex fluids. This work appeared in Science this week.

But once you stop stirring, it might still look like a liquid before enough time passes for the material to “re-heal” itself back into a solid.  The specific time scale aspect of certain thixotropic materials is what MechSE assistant professor Randy Ewoldt is focused on. Ewoldt was honored with the prestigious NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award, a grant for him to continue this research (titled “Thixotropic Yield Stress Fluids – Splashing, Spreading, Sticking”).
